Youth Trip to Higher Things-St. Louis
July 1 - 5, 2008

Zion Lutheran Church
Marshall, Michigan

June 25th Update
One Week to Go!

There was an informational and planning meeting for parents and youth immediately after the second service on Sunday, June 15, 2008. We chiefly discussed the information that is presented on this web page and decided upon a few minor changes to our plans:

1. Departure Time Change: The Hillsdale and Marshall groups will depart for Detroit Metro Airport on July 1st at 4:30 a.m. instead of 5:00 a.m. Those at the meeting suggested that we leave a little earlier to be sure of a timely arrival. We must consider I-94 Construction in Jackson County and the Ann Arbor rush hour.

2. The Mugges will meet us in Detroit: The three Zion groups (Marshall, Hillsdale, and Toledo) will travel to Detroit Metro separately and meet at 6:50 a.m. in the McNamara Terminal Parking Garage lobby on Level Six, just before the pedestrian bridge to the terminal. (See this map.)

3. Free Time Plans: We decided to use our evening free time sessions to travel by Metro to see the Gateway Arch/Union Station/Downtown on Wednesday evening (7:30 - 11:30 p.m) and then *somewhere else on Thursday evening (7:30 - 11:30 p.m). Other than the price for the Metro, there will be no cost for these evening excursions. (*We had planned on going to the zoo, but upon further inquiry, we discovered that it closes at 7:00 p.m.)

4. Luggage: Someone at the meeting said that airlines were now charging for luggage due to the rise of fuel costs, but each traveler is allowed one piece of luggage for free. Be sure to check Northwest's current policy regarding the size and weight requirements for luggage:

http://www.nwa.com/travel/luggage/checked.html#freeluggage

Since I mentioned weight, let me also add that once we arrive in St. Louis, we will be walking and using public transportation to complete the final leg of our trip to St. Louis University. Please remember that you must carry your luggage!

5. Medical Release: PLEASE remember that each particpant must have a signed MEDICAL RELEASE form!

6. Picture ID: Northwest's policy regarding picture ID's is as follows:

All passengers age 18 and older will be required to present valid government-issued photo identification (federal, state, or local). Example: driver's license or passport.

In the absence of government issued photo identification, two forms of identification will be required, one of which must be government-issued. Example: social security card and a WorldPerks card.

Even though an ID is apparently not required for minors, it probably would be a very good idea to have one.

Please contact me at rob.olson@yahoo.com, if you have any questions or concerns.

Spending Money

Extra Meals:

- No meals will be provided on any flights. That means that we will have to plan for three meals during this trip. First, folks could bring a bag breakfast for when we leave. Prices for food in airports are notoriously high and since we leave at 5:00 a.m., they might not feel like eating until we arrive at the airport.

Secondly, we will need buy our lunch on July 1st because that meal is not covered in the conference. Finally, we will need to plan on buying dinner on July 4th, and this might have to be at an airport.

Free Time Funds:

- There are three evening free time sessions. (See below.) Higher Things has told us that we may, as a group, elect to leave campus to see some of St. Louis, but this is up to us, and we will need to discuss our options and decide. Tourist attractions cost money.

Other Costs:

- Meals are the only definite additional cost until we decide if we are playing tourist during the free time sessions. Anything else folks wish to buy (snacks, shirts, etc.) is up to them.

Dress, Modesty, Etc.

The Higher Things FAQ page says this under General Information:

What should we bring?

Please bring clothing to dress modestly. Also, some people like to dress up for the Divine Service, light jacket or sweater, comfortable shoes for walking, catechism, Bible, notebook, pen, camera, backpack/bag, snacks, umbrella, personal toiletry items, spending money, sunscreen, refillable water bottle, shower shoes, medical release forms and insurance information.

Regarding modest dress, we should want to be modest in our dress and actions out of love for our neighbor:

"For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” -Galatians 5:13-14

Higher Things was unwilling to explain what they mean by "dress modestly", so we will need to decide for ourselves how the ladies and gentlemen of Zion Lutheran in Marshall, Michigan can and should "serve one another in love" through modest dress, speech, and behavior.

Higher Things writes:

We want to emphasize that attire is something that should be addressed by families and groups rather than left to chance. That said, it is not something that Higher Things strictly defines or enforces as an organization. We will teach youth about the principles of modesty and proper behavior, and then trust that they will learn from it and apply this freedom in Christ intelligently and rationally in their lives with the guidance of their parents and pastors and other mentoring adults.

I will look to Pastor James for guidance and teaching in this matter.

Mr. Olson
